Amputee Rehabilitation Guide

The road to recovery from limb loss is different for everyone.

This guide is an overview and is intended to help you along your amputee rehabilitation journey.

1. Post-Op Limb Care

There are several types of immediate post-surgical care.

Your surgeon will determine the specific type, or types, to be used in your scenario.

Typicaly, after amputation, a prosthetist will apply a soft dressing to a limb, which is intended to reduce sweling, to protect, and to shape the limb for future prosthetic fitting.

2. Prosthetic Evaluation

During this time, you will meet with one of our experienced clinicians, and we will ask you,

“What do you want to do?”

We will listen and begin to design a prosthesis that meets your needs and gets you back to your everyday life.

3. Prosthetic Socket & Device

After you are healed from your surgery, your clinician will measure and fit you with a preparatory prosthetic socket. We will then closely watch how your socket fits and make any needed adjustments to promote comfort and performance.

Once we have made any necessary changes, we will build your definitive (final) socket, deliver it to you, and conect it to the prosthetic device you and your care team have selected.

4. Therapy

You will work with your whole care team to ensure that you are using your prosthesis properly. In addition to including your prosthetist, this team could include your surgeon, other physician staff, and a physical therapist.

Physical therapists can be enormously helpful in returning people to full movement and independence.

5. Continued Care

Our commitment to you does not stop after we deliver your definitive device. Instead, we remain committed to your long-term health and success. Please contact us if you experience issues with your socket or device. We are always here for you.
