How to Apply a Below-Knee Post-Operative Limb Protector
After a below-knee amputation, your post-op limb protector does two important jobs: it protects your healing residual limb, and it keeps your knee straight to help prevent a knee flexion contracture (a tightening that makes it hard to fully straighten the knee). Wear it as much as possible, especially any time you plan to stand, transfer, or pivot.
Before you start:
- Apply the device while lying down with the residual limb extended
- It can go on over socks or a surgical dressing
Putting on the protector:
- Rest the limb in the bottom of the flexible plastic shell, with the round foam pads between the end of the limb and the bottom of the shell
- Place the front foam shell on the front of the residual limb, tucking its edges into the back piece
- Wrap the larger neoprene piece around the section below the knee, securing it to the Velcro on the sides of the plastic shell
- Wrap the smaller neoprene piece around the section above the knee, securing it to the Velcro on the sides of the shell
Adding the waist belt for upright activities:
- Any time you’ll be upright, wear the waist belt too
- Wrap the additional neoprene piece around the back and bottom of the device, with the thin straps facing the front
- Secure the waist belt around the waist
- Attach the waist belt to the neoprene wrap by threading the thin straps through the plastic loops
