Kristin

After surviving a devastating house fire, being pronounced dead, and losing her hand, Kristin Haskins' story could have ended. Instead, it became the beginning of a new chapter. With the support of her care team, community, and her prosthetic device—she found strength, independence, and even a name for her new hand: Phoenix.

A night that changed everything

On February 18, 2023, Kristin came home early, fed her two dogs and lay down to watch a movie. She woke up in a hospital room. A fire had started in her home that night. Firefighters found her in her bedroom, and she was pronounced dead before CPR brought her back. During the weeks she spent in a coma on life support, a blood clot traveled to her wrist and cost her her hand.

Support that started in the burn unit

Kristin chose Limb Lab, and our team met her for her first visit while she was still in the burn unit. Over 376 days in the hospital, her clinicians kept showing up. Her biggest fear was being treated differently. Instead, she found a team focused on getting her back to the life she wanted.

“They make you feel so comfortable and make you feel so normal.”

The little things that change everything

Today, Kristin’s prosthetic hand helps her cook, hold down a fitted sheet to make her bed and learn to tie her shoes again. Her device was donated by OTTOBACK, news she got in our office. She named it Phoenix, because she rose from the ashes.

“It sounds so silly, but it really is the little things that mean the most.”

A year ago, she didn’t think she’d be walking, driving or working again. She’s doing all three.
