Limb Lab : LIVES Lima Lab : LIVES Empowered Lives Empowered Lives 5.7 million people With over 2 million Americans currently living with limb loss and an additional 28 million at risk of amputation, it’s likely that you’ll cross paths with someone who has experienced—or is navigating—this challenging journey. In recognition of Limb Loss and Limb Difference Awareness Month, take the time to learn the facts—so you can offer informed support, genuine compassion, and hope to those who need it most.

Three
Common Causes
of Limb Loss

Vascular disease 1. Vascular disease impacts 54% of this population and includes conditions such as diabetes, peripheral arterial disease (PAD), and blood clots—all of which can restrict blood flow to the limbs. This reduced circulation can lead to pain, tissue damage, and non-healing wounds, which may ultimately result in amputation. Due to higher rates of diabetes and PAD, Black Americans are up to four times more likely to undergo amputation compared to white Americans. Trauma 2. Trauma is another leading cause of limb loss, accounting for an estimated 45% of amputations. It typically results from serious accidents or injuries, such as motor vehicle crashes, workplace incidents, sports-related injuries, and combat-related wounds. Cancer 3. Cancer is the third most common cause of limb loss, accounting for less than 2% of amputations. When tumors in the bone or cartilage fail to respond to treatment, amputation may become necessary.
