ANKLE FOOT ORTHOSIS (AFO)

REGAIN MOBILITY AND FREEDOM

WHAT IS AN ANKLE FOOT ORTHOSIS?

An Ankle Foot Orthosis (AFO) supports the ankle joint when there is weakness, malalignment, or injuries.

Conditions that may require an AFO brace:

  • Injuries
  • Arthritis
  • Foot drop
  • Cerebral palsy
  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Alignment deformities.

Your practitioner will help you determine the right style and fit so you can walk more safely and be more comfortable in daily life.

BENEFITS

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF AN AFO?

  • Maintain safe and steady walking by lifting your foot during steps, reducing the risk of trips or falls
  • Reduce pain and prevent further damage to ankle
  • Heal quicker in the affected area by offloading pressure
  • Promote knee extension while reducing the risk of hyperextension injuries.

FINDING THE RIGHT FIT

HOW DO YOU SELECT AN AFO?

Discuss with your clinician:

  • Sizing changes: Do you have frequent swelling, size changes or heat sensitivity in your lower legs?
  • Long-term condition: Is your condition expected to change overtime?
  • Environmental factors: What are typical conditions for your daily activities?
